ADR/Aeroporti di Roma: Adr Retail is born, Spin-off of the Duty Free Shop sector

Aeroporti di Roma, ADR Retail is born. The aims of the project ADR: alignment with the best international standards, development of spaces and enhancement of commercial options available, re-launch of services with a direct impact on users.

With the main aim of reaching the best European and international standards, ADR announced the start of the project for spin-off of Direct Retail activities (management of Duty Free and Duty Paid shops within the airports).

This project involves creation of the company ADR Retail, under the direct control of ADR, which will operate through the eight GoodBuy Roma shops, with a total surface area currently amounting to approximately 3,100 square metres, destined to rise to approximately 5,000 square metres within the year (+50%). In 2011, Direct Retail operations involved a staff of almost 250 employees and generated a turnover of approximately 92 million Euro, with a gross operating margin of 37 million Euro.

The spin-off project aims to guarantee Direct Retail activities the functional, economic and organisational independence necessary to enhance the development potential of commercial activities (with special focus on Italian and local products). All this through an offer in line with the best international practices, optimum use of space, increased logistic efficiency and more effective relations with suppliers.

In particular, as described above, the company will soon be starting the plan for expansion of sales areas, which will bring the commercial area up to a total of almost 5,000 m2 within the year, an increase of over 50%. Development of this kind will allow ADR to bring itself into line with the main European hubs in terms of extent and effectiveness, as well as ensuring considerable growth in revenue and margins even in the short term.

In a second phase, ADR Retail may be transferred to specialist operators through a competitive procedure open to the main international Duty Free / Duty Paid airport operators, with the aim of improving the quality of the offer still further, using experience and distinctive assets as leverage, creating operating synergies and thus enhancing activities fully.

The ADR Retail growth plan falls within the 2012-2044 Development Plan, which foresees investments of 12.1 billion Euro, of which 2.5 billion during the next ten years, and creation of 30,000 jobs in the short-medium term.

As part of the operation, ADR is committed to maintaining current employment levels.

The ADR Group manages and develops Rome’s Fiumicino and Ciampino airports and carries out other operations connected with and complementary to airport management. Fiumicino operates through four passenger terminals. It is dedicated to business and leisure customers using national, international and intercontinental routes; Ciampino is mainly used by low cost airlines, express couriers and for General Aviation operations. In 2011 the ADR airport system registered 42 million passengers, with over 220 destinations world-wide being reached from Rome thanks to the 100 airlines operating from the two airports.
